Remembering her.....

How time flies, it has been 13 years since my beloved mother passed away. Tomorrow is my mother's 13th death anniversary. Since tomorrow is a working day, I brought forward the Taoist's prayer ritual to today to pray for her soul. May the all knowing Buddha and merciful Kuanyim lift her soul in the paradise of the Almighty.

Typical of woman of her times, my late mother never attended a single day of formal education. She was born in China. When she was a young girl, my maternal grandparents brought her to Malaysia, and resettled in the small fishing village of Kuala Sebatang near Taiping. After the second world war, my maternal grand parents went back to China leaving behind my mother. Today, I still have relatives from my mother side living in China and Hong Kong, but I had lost contact with them.

During my childhood years, we do not have telephone, email, yahoo messenger, or skype. Communications are done through physical letters. I still remember how my mother used to ask me to read out to her letters from her parents, brothers, and sisters from China. She will sat there quietly and attentively as I read out the contents of the letters. Occasionally she shed tears, displayed joys, and some times laugh out heartily as I read out and translated the letters to her in Hokkien dialect. It must be tough for her to be illiterate. Not able to write and read, always need to depend on third party to communicate with her loved ones. I recalled she always reminded my father to ensure all my brothers and sister have good education. In her words to my father, “no matter how poor we are, we must not be poor in educating our children. Our children life will be better if they have good education.......”.

Remembering my late mother, for what I am today, I am forever grateful to her. I am a very blessed person because I once had a mother who loved me unselfishly and unconditionally. For better or for worst, she stood by me. When I was down, she lifted me up. When I am weak, she held me, nursed me, and gave me strength to be able to stand up again. For whatever wrong that I made, somehow, she had her own way of making it right for me. When I am down and everybody seemed to gave up on me, she was able to see the best in me, gave me words of encouragement, gave me hope and faith to shoulder on. She let me made my own decisions, and supported me in every which way she can. No matter how difficult the situation is, she was always there for me.

Mother, thank you very much for all your love, support, care, and faith in me. May the almighty continues to bless your soul. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, ............

The Chinese Bowl

I was having a small gatherings at a friend's place yesterday evening. This friend of mine came from the same home town as me. She does have certain degree of artistic inclinations. At her house, there is a collections of mixed old and new items that caught my attention. At the dinner table, a small Chinese bowl caught my attention.

Maybe age is catching up with me. Nowadays, I tend to be easily lapsed into sentimental recollection of past memories. The Chinese bowl at my friend's place reminded me of some past events associated with my mother. In my late parents' home in Taiping, we used to have many such type small Chinese bowls which we kept neatly in the old wooden cabinet which also being used as a storage area for foods and dried food stuffs. My mother used to serve the family porridge using the small Chinese bowls. Occasionally, my mother also used the Chinese bowl to offer foods to beggars who came knocking at the doors.

When we are sick, my mother also used the Chinese bowl to serve as hot and bitter Chinese herbal soup. I can vividly visualized how my mother took the pains and troubles to boil the the Chinese medicinal soup over charcoal stove, squatting and fanning the stove, checking the concoction at regular intervals over many hours. For a moment, my mind was brought back to my childhood years in my old house in Taiping......

I must admit, in addition to this sudden involuntary recollections of memories, there are not many days I have not thought of my mother. In her unassuming way, she lead life with dedication, humble, patient, and yet generous toward others. My mother, in her "uneducated" way, used to remind me, that life is like an empty bowl. A bowl is only useful if it is filled with appropriate foods to serve others. In life, we are all born equal in terms of material possessions - like an empty bowl. It is up to us to fill our life with generosity, dedications, and humility to achieve meaningful purpose. She also said , the bowl is like our body, a defective and dirty bow will not be able to serve its functions. Likewise, we need to have healthy body and mind to lead life of purpose.

Mother, thank you very much for giving me life, and teaching me how to lead my life. I know, your life has ended long time ago, but you still live in me, and mine is still not over yet. And, in memory of you, I shall live a purposeful and responsible life.

May the Almighty bless your soul. Namo amithaba Buddha....

In memory of my father...

Oh father,
These tears of sorrow and regret,
flow freely down my face.

In my heart,
I have many things to tell you.
Of my successes and failures,
of my aspirations and reservations,
and everything
a son would want a father to know.
But you will not able to listen anymore.

Writting down my thoughts of you,
will not lessen the pains of my memories.
The thought of you made my heart weep.

I grieved in solitude of your passing.
Does it matter how old I am ?
Since time immemorial,
a son always need a father.
When will this wound of sorrow and regret healed ?

On this 12th day of the 11th lunar month,
I offer my respect to you in prayer.
Father, I remembered your last words.
In silence, I pledge to you again,
I shall get it done.

Father, I remember you always.
Rest in Peace.
May God bless your soul

Tears in my heart......

I let you go not ?
Many years have passed,
you left me a glimpse of sorrow,
and a reminder of cruelty of fate.

I gave you no name,
nor a grave for remembrance.
I decided,
the winds shall carried away,
the ashes into the ocean.
The free spirits of ocean,
shall free your soul,
from this tormented world.

With tears in my heart,
and a heart of sorrow,
I cried to bid you goodbye.
Son, I am sorry.
You belong to heaven,
but heaven is not on earth.
I would hold your hand a bit longer,
If only I could,
if only I could.

I am not God,
to grant you the rights
to stay a bid longer in this world of mine.
If only you could,
if only you could.

You came back in shadow,
I see you.
I feel you.
But I can not hug you,
neither can I hold you in my arms.
You are not real,
but, a fragment of past memories.

Go, please go.
Go to where you belong.
I find no happiness,
in seeing you lost in this world,
where you does not belong.
Be brave, step forward.
over there, there is a place,
a serene and beautiful garden,
where angels belonged.

They said, life must go on.
It always will.
I have no more tears for you.
But rest assured,
forget you I will not.
You shall alway remained
in a special corner of my heart,
till the day I die.

Son, goodbye............

Farewell My Friend - Tham Chun Kong

I was very sad to receive 2 emails from former classmates of King Edward VII Secondary School regarding the untimely demised of a former classmate,Tham Chun Kong. Chun Kong passed away peacefully in his sleep in Singapore.

Today, you are gone...
We never have the opportunities
to catch up the lost years
and memories of you in our teenage years.......

Grieves we must
But Life must goes on....
There are still
many things to say and to do
But God has decided that
we must let you go and release you
to a better place
to the eternal and beautiful garden of God....

My friend,
Welcome Home to God
May God wipe
the tears and sorrows
of your loved ones
May God bless your soul
May you rest in Peace.........
