It's Pedra Branca forever........
The 28 year-old dispute between Malaysia and Singapore over a few pebbles in the South China Sea is finally over. On 23 May 2008, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is based in Hague, delivered its judgment over the sovereignty of Pedra Branca (Pulau Batu Puteh), Middle Rocks, and South Ledge.
The ICJ's judgment states that :
- Pedra Branca / Pulau Batu Puteh belongs to the Republic of Singapore;
- Middle Rocks belongs to Malaysia;
- South Ledge belongs to the State in the territorial waters of which it is located (?)
Read here for ICJ unofficial press release and Judgment.
"This morning's decision is a 'win-win' outcome to both sides. The ICJ decided based on historical facts and international law as well as administrative implications and other related matters...the court decided to award sovereignty to Singapore but at the same time awarded sovereignty over Middle Rocks to Malaysia. This is a victory for Malaysia as well..." - Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim.
Well, Syabas Malaysia ! Congratulation Singapore !Pedra Branca also housed the famous Horsburgh Lighthouse which was built in 1851. The lighthouse was named after James Horsburgh of the East India Company. Too bad, Malaysia lost this beautiful lighthouse to Singapore. I do hope Malaysians can take the ICJ's decision like REAL gentlemen and refrained from holding unnecessary emotional protests and demonstrations. Let's us respect the international law, and not behaving like cry babies to start boycotting each other's products and services.

Hi, I am a Singaporean so happened to chance upon your blog. Singapore including Pedra Branca was part of the Johor Sultanate and that is a recognised FACT. It is a win-win verdict I must say. As Singaporean, I am certainly happy that Singapore has Pedra Branca, it is important for we have been managing the place for umpteen years. Both countries can now forge ahead for closer co-operation. Cheers to all!
