They dragged my pregnant buffalo behind a four-wheel drive for 10KM....

I read some interesting ( or rather inhumane ) news in the local front regarding the inhumane handling of animals by the Ipoh City Hall. I am republishing these local news items in this blog. Well, I am already numbed by all these incidents of indiscriminate cruelty to animals by Malaysians. What is there to comment ? We are, after all, a self proclaimed righteous civil society and masyarakat penyayang, tapi tak semestinya bikin serupa cakap, and cakap tak serupa bikin. Malaysia truly Asia, Malaysia memang bolih.......

‘My buffalo was dragged, starved’

IPOH: A former commando who now owns an animal farm is incensed over an alleged act by Ipoh City Hall enforcement unit in dragging one of his buffaloes behind a moving vehicle for nearly 10km.
Sarjit Singh Guljara, 47, said he could not imagine anyone being so cruel .

Sarjit, who collected the seized animal from City Hall’s stable in Buntong here on Tuesday last week, said yesterday his buffalo had lost its tail, had injuries to its nostrils and neck, and looked as though it had not eaten for quite some time.

"I was shocked to see its condition. Now it’s eating everything I feed her. That’s how hungry she is. It looks as though she was not fed for at least six days while at the stable."

He said his neighbour also told him the enforcement team was quite rough in capturing the animal before tying it to the back of their vehicle.

"Imagine being dragged behind a speeding four-wheel drive. It’s nearly 10 km from my place to Buntong. This is heartless," he said.

Sarjit, who walks with a limp following an injury sustained while in service, also said that he did not receive any notice from City Hall over the seizure.

No animal abuse, says city council

IPOH: The City Council has denied allegations of cruelty in the handling of a buffalo seized during an operation at Desa Kebudayaan last month.
In a statement yesterday, the council said allegations that one of the buffaloes seized in the operation on March 16 had been dragged behind a four-wheel-drive were baseless and illogical.
"If this was true, the animal would have suffered grievous injuries and it would have endangered motorists," the council said.
It claimed that the animals had been loaded into lorries and transferred to stables in Buntong.
On Friday, former commando Sarjit Singh Guljara said a neighbour had told him that the buffalo had been dragged behind a city council vehicle for at least 10km.
He made the allegations after finding the animal without its tail and with injuries to its nose and neck when he collected it from the city council stable in Buntong.

SAM (Friends Of The Earth Malaysia) is shocked at news report in a local daily in which it was reported that a pregnant buffalo was dragged and starved. Dragging the poor animal for 10km behind a four wheel drive constitutes the single most extreme example of man’s inhumanity to another sentient creature.

The unprofessional, aggressive and brutal handling of animals has no place in Malaysian society. Apart from being dragged through the streets it was also starved for six days until the owner took her back.

SAM condemns in the strongest terms this disgraceful and irresponsible action committed by the team. It is wrong for animals to be treated in such a brutal and heartless manner which is not consistent with a proper value and respect for animal life. Animals are not to be used and abused.

Any enforcement officer tasked with the responsibility of removing an animal from a public place should act with sense towards the animal, which is capable of feeling pain and extreme hunger. The buffalo had to pay a price for merely straying into a public area.

Such atrocities towards a defenceless creature should not be condoned and SAM calls for a thorough investigation of the case by both City Hall and the State Veterinary Enforcement Unit. This is to ensure that those responsible be brought to book,

SAM finally urges for a legislative review of animal laws covering a broader perspective of animal rights in the amendment to the Animal Ordinance 1952.
