After more than 42 years of not having a hair cut, 73-year old Tran Van Hay in Hoa An Village, Mong Tho Commune, Chau Thanh District, Kien Giang Province, has recently been recorded in Vietnam’s Guinness Book for his hair of 6.3 metres in length and 9kg in weight. Now he is waiting to be recorded in the World’s Guinness Book.
Talking about her husband’s hair, Nguyen Thi Hoa said: “I married him at the age of 21 and at that time he was an ordinary person. However, few years later he usually got sick after having his hair cut. When we had our first child, he was afraid of being sick and not being able to provide for family so he wanted to grow his hair. I agreed and he has not had hair cut for 42 years.”
Since he decided to have long hair, many things have changed in his personality. He became very gentle and usually followed monks to treat poor patients with medicinal herbs. Gradually, he becomes well-known for his good treatment. On a visit to his homeland in Rach Gia, Kien Gia, Jean Mare, a French of Vietnamese origin, found him and asked him to feel his pulse and prescribe a medicine. Only two months later, he completely recovered from his heart disease. He also introduced his seven French friends to Tran Van Hay. At present, Tran Van Hay is a member of the Vietnam Association of Oriental Medicine.
For many years, Tran Van Hay has had a moderate lifestyle. Everyday, he spends about one hour in the morning, afternoon and at night to sit in meditation. With the long hair, he also faces some difficulties in daily life. In the daytime, he has to wrap his hair around his head and use a special headscarf to protect it but when sleeping he put his hair to one side and it looks like a giant python.
